US Navy pea coat World war ll era vintage: The real deal see size below as the "medium" required in the listing above is???? (my earlier posting had some bad size data - I apologize for the error).

This coat is as close to new as you can get. Its tag says: US Naval Clothing (and a word I can not make out), Brooklyn New York, size 49, Inspector J O. I assume the 49 is a mens size during world war II?

And has no relevance today (It is sure not a size 49) See actual dimensional measurements below. Following wiki leaks guide to determine size of an existing coat (laying flat) - good reference source. 1 Width: Across front of coat, laying flat buttoned up, between base of arm pits = 20-1/4" and the doubled = 40-1/2" chest size.

2 Length: measured from base of collar to bottom of coat = 29 (this measurement is an esthetic choice, not a fit choice). 3 Sleeve length : measured on back side of coat laying flat, from centerline of collar out along the curve of the sleeve to cuff = 35-1/4. 4 Width: laying flat, measured on the back between shoulders at the sleeve seams = 16-1/2.

Using these measurements and a size charts it suggests that the coat is on the edge between small and medium, however the sizing charts seem to be all over the map and not consistent with actual inches dimensions in terms of saying that it's small or medium. A friend, he's a 32 tried it on; and it was to big - I'm a 42 and its to small. So its probably a 34 or 36 but you must refer to the actual measurements above. One site with the history of the peacoat suggested they tend to run tight for a given "Size" so it may be best to go up a coat size from your normal. The coat has spent most of its life here in Birmingham MI in a closet.

I believe it was the the owners fathers (who was in the navy) who was smaller then him and that is why it was never worn - at least by the second owner, I'm the third owner. Close inspection shows no worn seams, cuffs, rips, tears, stains, smells - it has tag end threads (2) from original sewing which I tried to show in the photo close up as good indicators of lack of wear.

The tag shows the most loss which I assume is just the nature of the material and ink. We found a mimeograph: Titled; Chrysler Jefferson maintenance bowling legal showing the various teams and their scores and dated December 12, 1947.

White team 42 and bowled I guess a 153, I don't know anything about bowling. So a great providence and a charming document which is of course is included and folded in the pocket that it was found in.

(some may be too young to remember the mimeograph, I do, from grade school, and you can't leave them out in the sun they will fade to nothing). I got curious and looked up the plant and I have enclosed a page on it's history. By 1947 they had to have been making cars although they made military equipment during the war. Also enclosed is a spare button which was found in the pocket and the dry cleaning lady - says would have been supplied with the coat originally.

I looked at others for sale (new 300 to as much as 500) and used - worn - 75 on up, I notice several things. A lot of the photos show the coats as being rather gray. I discovered that this is possibly an iPhone thing. Because depending on my photo, mine can look a little gray. But in fact it's absolutely perfect deep blue as you would expect. I believe the others are also blue and they are all photographing incorrectly in the gray shade. I also cannot find any examples with a similar tag or Providence which makes me believe a lot of them are quite new - reproductions.
